Your Questions, Answered

Everything you need to know before booking your Prenatal Care.

When should I start prenatal care?

Prenatal care should begin as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, ideally around 6–8 weeks gestation. Early prenatal visits allow us to confirm the pregnancy, calculate your due date, and begin vital health screenings.

Starting care early helps us monitor the development of your baby and catch any potential concerns before they become issues. We’ll also provide information to support your health and help you prepare for each stage of pregnancy.

What should I expect at my first prenatal appointment?

At your first visit, we’ll conduct a full health and medical history review, perform baseline lab tests, and typically arrange your first ultrasound. We’ll discuss your lifestyle, nutrition, medications, and any symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and address any anxieties or concerns. This initial visit helps build a strong foundation for the care you’ll receive throughout your pregnancy.

Is prenatal care covered by Alberta Health?

Yes, most prenatal visits, routine testing, and ultrasounds are covered by Alberta Health. If there are any optional services or tests not covered, we will review them with you in advance.

Our front desk team will assist with direct billing and help ensure your care remains as accessible and affordable as possible. You’ll always be informed about your options and any out-of-pocket costs.

Can I bring my partner or support person to appointments?

Absolutely. Pregnancy is a shared experience, and we welcome support partners at your visits. Whether it’s for emotional support or to be involved in learning about your baby’s progress, your partner is encouraged to attend.

For ultrasounds or major milestone appointments, it can be especially meaningful. Let us know if you have questions about who can attend.

What if I have a high-risk pregnancy?

If you are identified as high-risk due to medical history, age, or pregnancy-related conditions, we'll tailor your care plan to include more frequent monitoring and specialized support. We may also coordinate care with an obstetrician or perinatologist, depending on your needs.

Our team will be with you every step of the way to ensure your safety and the healthiest outcome possible. You will never be left navigating a high-risk pregnancy alone.

How can I stay healthy during pregnancy?

Maintaining a healthy pregnancy involves a combination of good nutrition, regular movement, adequate sleep, and prenatal vitamins. We’ll provide specific recommendations based on your health history and stage of pregnancy.

Avoiding harmful substances, managing stress, and attending all scheduled visits are also key. Our team will offer education and guidance at every step to support your well-being and help you feel your best.

What tests will I need during pregnancy?

Routine tests during pregnancy include blood work, urine tests, ultrasounds, and genetic screening if indicated. These tests help assess your health and your baby’s development and identify any conditions that require attention.

As you progress, we may also conduct glucose screening for gestational diabetes and tests for infections like Group B Strep. We’ll walk you through each test so you understand its purpose and importance.

Can I ask questions about labour, delivery, or postpartum care?

Yes, our prenatal visits are designed to support you throughout your entire pregnancy, including preparing for labour, delivery, and postpartum recovery. We encourage open conversations about birth preferences, pain management, hospital procedures, and what to expect during recovery.

The better informed you are, the more confident and empowered you’ll feel. We’re here to provide answers and reassurance at every stage of your journey.
