What’s Included in a Fertility Assessment
Fertility assessments are comprehensive evaluations aimed at uncovering factors that may be affecting your ability to conceive. Depending on your situation, your assessment may include:
- Detailed health history review, including menstrual cycles, past pregnancies, and lifestyle factors
- Hormonal testing to evaluate ovarian function, thyroid health, and other reproductive hormones
- Ovulation tracking and cycle monitoring to assess timing and consistency
- Pelvic ultrasound to check for uterine abnormalities, cysts, or fibroids
- Semen analysis for male partners to assess sperm count, motility, and morphology
- Review of any previous fertility treatments, medications, or medical concerns
Our goal is to provide you with a clear picture of your fertility health and recommend personalized next steps based on your results.
Common Causes of Fertility Challenges We Assess
Fertility can be impacted by a wide range of physical, hormonal, and lifestyle factors. At Cure MD, we help identify and address:
- Ovulatory Disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation due to PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, or hormonal imbalances
- Tubal Factor Infertility: Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes often due to past infections or pelvic inflammatory disease
- Uterine or Structural Issues: Fibroids, polyps, or uterine abnormalities that affect implantation or pregnancy success
- Male Factor Infertility: Low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal sperm shape affecting fertilization
- Endometriosis: A condition where uterine lining tissue grows outside the uterus, impacting fertility and causing pain
- Age-Related Decline: Reduced egg quantity or quality, particularly in individuals over 35
- Unexplained Infertility: When no specific cause is found despite testing, requiring strategic fertility support
By understanding the root causes, we can work with you to improve your chances of conception through lifestyle changes, supplements, timed intercourse, or referral to fertility specialists when needed.
When to Book a Fertility Assessment
You may want to consider a fertility assessment if:
- You’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if over age 35) without success
- You have irregular or absent menstrual cycles
- You’ve experienced multiple miscarriages or failed pregnancies
- You have a known condition such as PCOS, endometriosis, or thyroid disorder
- Your partner has a history of infertility or low sperm count
- You are considering assisted reproductive techniques such as IUI or IVF
- You want to proactively evaluate your fertility before starting a family
The sooner we identify any barriers, the sooner we can begin working toward solutions that support your reproductive goals.
Your Questions, Answered
How long should we try to conceive before seeking a fertility assessment?
If you are under 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months without success, or over 35 and trying for 6 months, it’s a good time to schedule a fertility assessment. Early testing can help identify issues before they become more complex.
Even if you're not ready to conceive right away, an assessment can provide peace of mind and help with future planning. Our team is here to guide you, no matter where you are in your journey.
Is the fertility assessment process invasive or painful?
Most of the evaluation involves blood tests, cycle monitoring, ultrasounds, and a health history review. These are non-invasive or minimally invasive and generally well-tolerated.
If further diagnostic procedures are recommended, such as a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or laparoscopy, we’ll explain everything clearly and ensure you’re supported throughout. Your comfort and emotional well-being are always a top priority.
Can both partners be assessed at the same time?
Yes, we encourage both partners to participate when possible. Male fertility factors are involved in approximately 30–40% of infertility cases, so a semen analysis and lifestyle review for male partners can be very helpful.
We’ll guide you through coordinated testing and results so you feel supported as a couple. Comprehensive assessments often lead to faster and more effective treatment planning.
What happens after the assessment is complete?
Once all test results are in, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to review the findings in detail. We’ll explain any abnormalities, discuss treatment options or next steps, and provide recommendations tailored to your specific needs.
In some cases, this may include medication, lifestyle adjustments, or a referral to a fertility clinic for advanced reproductive support. Our goal is to provide a clear roadmap forward.
What if my tests come back normal, but I still can’t get pregnant?
This is known as unexplained infertility, and while it can be frustrating, there are still many paths forward. We may recommend further evaluation, timed intercourse, or assisted reproductive technologies.
Just because a cause isn’t immediately identified doesn’t mean treatment won’t be effective. Many couples in this category go on to have successful pregnancies with the right support and intervention.
Is fertility testing covered by Alberta Health?
Some components of fertility assessments, such as bloodwork and ultrasounds, may be covered by Alberta Health. Others, including semen analysis or specialized imaging, may not be fully covered.
Our administrative team will walk you through what’s included, provide cost estimates for any private services, and assist with direct billing whenever possible. We aim to make the process as transparent and affordable as we can.
Can I be proactive and test my fertility even if I’m not trying to conceive yet?
Absolutely. Many individuals choose to assess their fertility early, especially if they’re planning for children in the future or want to understand their reproductive health.
This can include testing for hormone levels, ovarian reserve, and lifestyle factors that may impact fertility down the line. Early awareness empowers you to make informed choices and plan for the future on your own terms.
Do you offer fertility treatment at Cure MD?
While Cure MD specializes in fertility assessments and early-stage treatment planning, we do not currently offer assisted reproductive procedures like IUI or IVF in-clinic.
However, we maintain strong partnerships with local fertility clinics and can refer you for advanced interventions when appropriate. We’ll continue to support your journey through follow-up care, cycle monitoring, and fertility-focused wellness plans.
