At Cure MD, we provide physician-led assessments and prescriptions for medical cannabis as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. If you’re struggling with chronic pain, muscle stiffness, nausea, or appetite loss, medical cannabis may offer a natural alternative to traditional medication especially when standard therapies have been ineffective or poorly tolerated.

We believe in open, stigma-free conversations and work closely with you to determine if cannabis is a clinically appropriate option for symptom management and quality of life.
What to Expect from a Medical Cannabis Assessment
A medical cannabis consultation at Cure MD is a focused visit designed to evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and eligibility for cannabis use under Health Canada guidelines. If approved, your physician will provide guidance on usage, product selection, and licensed providers.
Your assessment typically includes:
- Medical History Review
Discussion of current symptoms, diagnoses, previous treatments, and any history of substance use or contraindications - Risk vs. Benefit Evaluation
Your physician will assess whether cannabis may improve your condition and how it compares to other available therapies - Discussion of THC and CBD Ratios
Education on the psychoactive and non-psychoactive components of cannabis to match the formulation to your goals - Prescription and Licensed Producer Registration
If deemed appropriate, we will issue a prescription and help you register with a Health Canada–approved supplier - Usage Guidelines and Safety Instructions
You’ll receive information about dosing, ingestion methods, side effects, and legal considerations
Our team is here to answer your questions and ensure you feel fully informed about incorporating cannabis into your treatment plan.
Conditions Medical Cannabis May Help With
Medical cannabis is not a cure, but it can provide symptom relief for specific conditions when used appropriately under medical supervision. It is most commonly prescribed for:
- Chronic Pain
Especially neuropathic (nerve-related) pain or palliative care cases where other medications have failed - Nausea and Vomiting
Often used in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to manage treatment-related side effects - Appetite Loss and Weight Loss
For patients with AIDS or other chronic conditions affecting appetite and metabolism - Muscle Spasticity and Stiffness
Particularly in patients with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries who do not respond well to standard medications - Sleep Disturbances and Anxiety
Select cases may benefit from cannabis as a secondary option for sleep or anxiety when traditional treatments are not well-tolerated
Note: Cannabis is not a first-line treatment for most conditions and may not be suitable for everyone. We evaluate each case individually to ensure safety and efficacy.

Your Questions, Answered
Do I need a referral for a medical cannabis consultation?
Yes. A valid referral from your family physician or a walk-in doctor is required to schedule a medical cannabis assessment at Cure MD. This ensures your physician is aware of your condition and can support ongoing care in conjunction with any cannabis use.
Is medical cannabis covered by Alberta Health?
No. While the assessment is covered by Alberta Health with a referral, the cost of medical cannabis products is not. Patients are responsible for purchasing their prescription directly from a licensed producer. Some private insurance plans may offer partial reimbursementcheck with your provider.
Is medical cannabis the same as recreational cannabis?
Not quite. While both are derived from the same plant, medical cannabis is prescribed and dosed based on your condition under physician guidance. Medical products are subject to strict quality controls and come from licensed producers with traceable product information. Recreational use lacks this medical oversight and is not supported by our clinic.
Will cannabis make me feel high or affect my ability to work?
It depends on the THC content. High-THC products can cause psychoactive effects, which may impact focus or coordination. If you are concerned, your physician may recommend a low-THC or CBD-dominant product. Always discuss your daily activities, occupation, and preferences with your provider so we can recommend a safe and functional option.
Can medical cannabis help with anxiety or depression?
Cannabis may offer relief for some mental health symptoms, but it is not considered a primary treatment for anxiety or depression and can sometimes worsen these conditions in sensitive individuals. We evaluate mental health histories carefully to ensure cannabis will not interfere with emotional or psychiatric stability.
How long does it take to receive my medical cannabis after the appointment?
Once your prescription is issued, we help you register with a licensed producer. Shipping times vary by provider, but most patients receive their cannabis products within 3–7 business days. Some producers also offer ongoing patient support, dosing instructions, and auto-refill options.
Can I drive while using medical cannabis?
Driving under the influence of THCeven when medically prescribed is illegal and may impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely. If you’re prescribed a THC-containing product, your physician will advise on appropriate usage windows and safety guidelines. CBD-only products generally do not impair cognitive function but still require caution.
Can I smoke medical cannabis?
Although dried flower is a prescribed format, smoking is not recommended due to the health risks associated with inhaling combusted materials. Vaporization or oral ingestion is preferred. Your provider will advise on safer alternatives and administration methods.
